South Boston Catholic Academy
South Boston Catholic Academy is a new Catholic elementary school that opened in September 2009 at the site of the current St. Brigid Elementary School. It serves the needs of students, Grades PreK-8, who were previously enrolled at St. Brigid and Gate of Heaven schools in South Boston. As of April 2009, there were 340 students already enrolled for the fall. There is sufficient space to ultimately serve 450 matriculating students.
South Boston Catholic Academy opened with the following improvements:
- Upgraded standards-based curriculum and teaching material for all grades in Math and Reading/English Language Arts
- Professional development for teachers in targeted academic areas, in collaboration with area colleges and universities
- Two new Pre-Kindergarten classrooms
- New white boards installed in each classroom
- New security system
- New parish school advisory board
- New Home and School Association established
The Campaign for Catholic Schools committed to help fund this effort, raising $201,000 for the following:
- New security system
- New mathematics textbooks
- New Literacy Collaborative materials (For Reading/English Language Arts)
- New whiteboards installed in each classroom
